College students as Visiting Lecturers

I would like to work with local high school teachers in providing guest speakers for their mathematics classes. The guest speakers would be students in my college mathematics classes. Part of each student's final grade would depend on her or his participation in the presentation of some topic from the college level course to the high school class. For small college classes (8 or fewer) each student would be a guest speaker, for larger classes the students would work in groups of two to three. Evaluation of the college students would include :

(1) A short (2 page) written report by the students of the lesson and its implementation.

(2) An evaluation of the students compiled by the high school class members and their teacher.

(3) A ``hindsight'' report from each student in a group about what went well and what did not, including suggestions for improving the presentation.

Such a project would benefit the high school students in that they would see what college mathematics is about. Also, it would benefit the college student to have the practice in preparing a presentation for others and presenting to a group for whom the topic is not familiar (a very valuable job skill for almost any work arena). Finally, of course, there is the benefit of opening communications with local high schools and making clear to high school teachers and students - including students who may never have considered going to college - the expectations that college mathematics students must fulfill.
